Mentoring in Education (#2, 2022 – May

Click on the picture above to watch the introduction video.

Mentoring has been around for a long time and we all think we know what it is. However, over the years, mentoring has developed into a significant field of study with multiple applications in education.

In our course we will have the opportunity to build our understanding of the subject through some reading (and videos) from experts, videos about projects in different contexts, and mainly by discussing our discovery and doubt with each other during synchronous class time as well as the online asynchronous forum.

We will discuss difference between mentoring and other areas such as coaching, tutoring, teaching, friendship, advice, and so on. We will discuss what mentoring looks like in school and discuss whether the concept of "good students helping struggling students" is the best model for our contexts.

After the course you will feel confident of your ability to contribute to a mentoring project within your own school context — whether that be a mentoring programme for students or teachers.

The course is built around this shared discovery and learning community rather than through presentation of content via a more traditional instructional model.

This is an "all cameras on" course — you will be expected to be present via a webcam and microphone for full participation.

Our motto will be "There is comfort in the learning zone, and no learning in the comfort zone!"

You can also join the Mentoria em Educação group on Facebook (make sure you answer the questions to join the group)

Important note:

The course is designed to be covered in approximately 3 weeks.

Classes are held Saturdays, and there is asynchronous work alongside classes. The course is intensive and you should consider your ability to ensure you can dedicate the necessary time.

ASYNCHRONOUS READING / VIDEO
There are a few texts you are asked to read (but not read deeply). There may be some short videos for individual work and evaluation is partly done through each participant creating a 1–2 minute video that is presented in the last session.

If you have questionsplease get in touch.

ASYNCHRONOUS FORUM

Think about between 30 – 50 minutes for forum work. Only 4 forums are specifically evaluated.

ASYNCHRONOUS READING / VIDEO
There may be some reading or short videos as "homework". They should not take more than 60 minutes of work!

Mentoring in Educational Contexts · CFECO Edition (Oct–Dec 2021)

Mentoring has been around for a long time and we all think we know what it is. However, over the years, mentoring has developed into a significant field of study with multiple applications in education.

In our course we will have the opportunity to discuss ideas around what mentoring is, or isn't. We will discuss and compare mentoring to other models of helping relationships we may also find in education (tutoring, coaching, teaching, counselling).

Whether or not you are actively involved in a mentoring programme in your school, this course will prepare you to confidently contribute in already running programmes as well as setting up your own projects in your own context.

I do not intend to give ideas of "ready made" ideas, or tell you what you should or shouldn't do, but rather to build your confidence and awareness to enable you to further develop your own ideas and think about wider applications for mentoring in educational contexts.

Important note:

ASYNCHRONOUS WORK — the course contains a discussion forum which runs each week after class, which requires participation on the weekend. You may have 1 hour of other reading or research, and 1 hour (spread over Saturday and Sunday) to interact with each other. The forum discussion ends two days before the next class.

(Remember, if the course were face-to-face, there would probably be a class on the weekend).
